RAV4 wheels and tires: sizes, bigger tires, and new looks

What came on each trim, the biggest tire that fits without a lift, and the cheapest ways to change your wheels.

Here's a secret that saves people hundreds of dollars: the XSE's gloss black wheels and the XLE Premium's gunmetal wheels are the exact same wheel, just in different colors. This guide covers that, plus factory tire sizes, the biggest all-terrain tire that fits without a lift, and what bigger tires do to your gas mileage.

Factory wheels and tires by trim

These are the RAV4 Hybrid's factory setups from Toyota's 2023 and 2024 brochures.

SE, XSE18 x 7Gloss black (Toyota calls it black-gray)225/60R1828.6 in

Prime XSE19 x 7.5Black and machined235/55R1929.2 in

Notice the 17-inch and 18-inch setups stand almost exactly the same height. That means you can swap between them without throwing off the speedometer.

Change the color without changing the wheel

The XSE's black wheel and the XLE Premium's gunmetal wheel are the same design, 18 x 7 with a 35 mm offset. Toyota part 4261A0R160 is the black one and 4261A0R150 is the gray one. So if you like one look but bought the other trim, you have options, and your center caps, lug nuts, and tire pressure sensors all carry over.

Powder-coat your own wheels

About $520 to $700 for four

The cheapest way to a new color, since your wheels are already the right design.

  • A typical 2026 price for 17 to 18-inch wheels is $100 to $140 a wheel, including taking the tires off, putting them back on, and balancing. A custom color adds $30 to $60 a wheel.
  • The catch: you'll be without the car for a couple of days. Get a local quote.

Buy a second set in the other color

About $830 to $1,730
  • New replicas, about $830 fitted. Factory Wheel Replacement sells a new copy of the gray wheel for $168 each. It isn't made by Toyota, and the finish has a one-year warranty.
  • Reconditioned genuine Toyota wheels, $300 each from OriginalWheels, in Toyota's exact shade.
  • A used genuine set with tires and sensors, about $1,500 delivered on eBay. Ask for the tread depth and the tires' date codes.
  • Brand-new from Toyota, about $433 a wheel from online Toyota parts dealers, or about $1,730 for four.

Selling your old wheels takes some of the cost back. Used XSE black wheels go for about $150 to $180 each on eBay.

Two sets of wheels = an easy winter setup. Keep winter tires mounted on one set and summer or all-season tires on the other. Each season, you swap wheels instead of paying to have tires taken off and put back on.

Bigger all-terrain tires

Bigger, chunkier tires are a big part of the rugged RAV4 look. Here's what owners found.

245/65R17 is the sweet spot

No lift needed
  • Three of the owner builds we studied run this size on 17-inch wheels with no lift. One of those owners says it's the biggest tire that fits without one.
  • It's about 29.5 inches tall, roughly an inch taller than stock, so your speedometer will read about 3 percent low.
  • One hybrid owner says his rub slightly on sharp turns.
  • Popular picks in this size: Toyo Open Country A/T III (about $235 a tire), Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail, and Nokian Outpost AT. The Woodland comes from the factory on Falken Wildpeaks.
  • Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol if you drive in snow. The Toyo carries it.
All-terrains cost you gas mileage. One RAV4 Hybrid owner tracked it: his highway average dropped from 38 mpg to 34 mpg, about 11 percent, after switching to all-terrain tires on new wheels. They're also much heavier than factory tires, about 41 pounds each for one popular all-terrain.

Check the fit with new wheels. One owner's aftermarket wheels hit the brake calipers until he added 15 mm wheel spacers. Ask the wheel seller to confirm they clear RAV4 brakes.

Going up to 19-inch wheels

The Prime XSE and some gas trims came with 19-inch wheels, and they bolt onto the hybrid too.

Buddy's take

For the rugged look, 245/65R17 all-terrains on 17-inch wheels are the proven setup. Just budget for a few mpg less.

For a new color on a budget, powder-coat the wheels you already have.

If you live where it snows, a second set of wheels with winter tires turns every seasonal change into a quick wheel swap.
