RAV4 roof racks, and which ones work with the panoramic roof

Crossbars or a platform, how much the roof can hold, and how to keep your glass roof opening.

Most RAV4 owners only need a pair of crossbars. If you want to carry a lot, mount lights, or put a tent up top, you'll want a platform rack. And if your RAV4 has the panoramic glass roof, most platform racks are off the table. Here's what works.

Crossbars: the easy choice

Toyota Roof Rack Cross Bars

About $200 to $230

Toyota's own matte black bars, part PT278-42192. They're lockable and rated for 100 pounds spread across both bars.

  • Without crossbars, the factory roof rails can't carry anything. Add these and you can mount a cargo box, bike carrier, or kayak cradle.
  • Four screws go into mounting points already in the rails, and the screws come in the box. It takes about 15 minutes.
  • They don't fit the Adventure, which has different rails.

Platform racks on a regular roof

Prinsu full-length rack

About $980

The popular low-profile platform. Owners pick it because it sits low, so it adds little wind noise and barely hurts fuel economy.

  • Installing it is a real project. The factory rails come off, rivet nuts get set into the roof, a hole may need drilling deeper, and the headliner comes down. One owner had a rivet nut spin on him.
  • It ships with six or seven crossbars. Some owners run only three to keep the moonroof view open.
  • It doesn't fit a RAV4 with the panoramic roof, may need drilling on an XLE, and isn't compatible with the LE.

If you have the panoramic glass roof

The panoramic roof was only offered on the XSE and Limited. Racks like the Prinsu bolt into the roof right where the glass and its sliding parts are, so they can't be used. The racks that work clamp to the side rails and bridge over the glass instead, so nothing gets drilled.

1

Greenlane Offroad full roof rack

$1,350 base

The safest pick for a panoramic roof. It's the only one that says outright the glass roof still opens fully, and two reviewers with panoramic roofs say it does.

  • Bolts on in under an hour, with no drilling and no taking down the headliner.
  • Buy the base rack with five crossbars. Five is the most you can run and still open the roof, so the extra crossbar option defeats the point.
  • Weighs 40 pounds, made in Canada, with a lifetime warranty. Expect about a six-week wait.
2

Spider No-Drill roof rack

$899.99

Made specifically for the panoramic roof. You pick the "Panoramic Sunroof" version when you order.

  • Rated for 200 pounds while driving and 500 pounds parked. The regular-roof version is rated higher.
  • No drilling. The factory side rails come off.
  • A low, flat platform, close in shape to the Prinsu.
3

Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform with RCL legs

$1,162.97

Promising, but ask first. It clamps to the low-profile rails on the XSE and Limited, so nothing is drilled, and it's only two inches tall.

  • We couldn't confirm whether the glass roof still opens with it fitted, or how much it can hold. Ask Rhino-Rack both before you order.
Skip the Front Runner Slimline II on a panoramic roof. It's a good rack, but Front Runner's own fitting note says that with it installed, the glass roof can only tilt up to vent. It never slides open again.

How much can the roof hold?

There are two different limits, and mixing them up is the most common mistake.

Rooftop tent math: add the rack's weight to the tent's weight. That total has to fit under the driving limit. A 40-pound rack plus a 130-pound tent is already 170 pounds, which leaves almost nothing for gear on the roof. Sleeping inside the car avoids the problem entirely. See our car camping guide, or our rooftop tent guide for tents that fit.

Buddy's take

If you just haul bikes or a cargo box, get Toyota's crossbars and stop there. They're cheap, quick, and work on every roof.

If you have the panoramic roof and want a platform, get the Greenlane base rack. It's the one proven to keep your glass roof opening.

If your roof is solid and you like a project, the Prinsu is the classic low-profile choice.

Still to come

Cargo boxes, bike racks, wind noise fixes, and Thule and Yakima crossbar options are next. For tents, see rooftop tents for the RAV4.

Where this comes from
  • Prices and details from each maker's own product pages, checked September and October 2026: Toyota, Greenlane Offroad, Spider, Rhino-Rack via Off Road Tents, and Front Runner via SDHQ.
  • Prinsu install details from RAV4 owners' build videos.
  • The 176-pound roof limit is reported from the 2019 to 2025 owner's manuals by AutoRoamer, and Toyota Europe's crossbar instructions also show 80 kilograms.
